For an excellent day outing to the Dry Tortugas, a trip on the Yankee Freedom ferry is considered one of Key West’s top vacation activities. The large modern catamaran takes passengers across the 70-mile strait in a little over two hours, and makes its return trip four hours after arriving at Garden Key. The ferry is also contracted to give guided tours of Fort Jefferson, the 19th century fortress which is the main historical feature of the island. Most visitors split their time between wandering the rooms and tunnels of the fort, and snorkeling in the key’s famously clear waters. The Yankee Freedom has a full galley and bar, and a continental breakfast is included on the trip over. The trip itself is part of the fun, since the area is a marine preserve full of exotic marine life and birds; the skipper provides a running commentary, as well as an orientation talk upon arrival. The Yankee Freedom can be booked for campers as well as day visitors. For the full Dry Tortugas experience, the Yankee Freedom is the gateway to an unforgettable vacation trip.

Tips for Families
The ferry provides welcome snacks and drinks as the island has no services of any kind; so extra food and water must be brought along, and small games for restless children might be a good idea as well. Don't forget the sunscreen.
