MY KIDS

My Travel Style

Our kids are young, so we prefer short, mini vacations because they are easier to plan and execute with all of the variables that come with small children! Also, because our kids are still fairly little, they are easy to impress! A hotel with a pool or a visit to the zoo are still favorites. Fortunately for us (and our budget) our kids are cheap and easy dates. (For now!)

Wednesday night is street-legal drag racing!

Flag review

We went on Wednesday night, and for a minimal fee anyone can enter their vehicle to participate in drag racing with others. There were hot rods, sporty cars, pickups, and even a few motorcycles. It was only $5 for all of us to get in the gate. The kids loved hearing the roar of the engines and guessing how fast the cars were going (they do clock them to see how fast they go!) Just a fun way to spend a couple of hours.

Tips for Families

We had an 18 month old and she was bored, but it worked out okay. You might not be so lucky. I wouldn't recommend it for under age 3. Also, be sure to find out where you're allowed to sit and where you're not. They didn't section off the areas you were supposed to avoid and we got scolded by a security guard for being in an "unsafe" area. (Hard to know it's unsafe if you've never been there before and it's not marked "unsafe!")

Yummy, hot breakfast & nice pool.

Flag review

The breakfast was delicious and hot. The front desk helped my husband arrange taxi service so the kids and I could sleep in while my husband went to an early meeting. The breakfast attendant was very helpful when I took the kids for breakfast by myself. She was great. Some hotels (especially in a college town like Ames) do not welcome young children, but all of the employees we encountered were very helpful and welcoming toward our kids. We'll definitely stay here again.

Tips for Families

Bring floatation devices for your younger children -shallow end of pool is 3 feet deep.

Awesome indoor water park!

Flag review

Our family had a blast at this hotel. The waterpark was great with numerous slides and zero-depth entry. We stayed in the two-room family suite and brought the grandparents along. The front desk was very accommodating with extra pillows and There's also a Cabela's nearby -the kids loved all of the animals (taxidermy) and the fish tanks.

Tips for Families

The only thing I didn't like about this hotel was that we were expecting free continental breakfast as that was what the website said. However, they do give you vouchers for kids to eat free in the on-site hotel and the food is a good variety of "American" food. It is kid-friendly, but a little pricey. We ended up walking to a subway nearby for a breakfast sandwich. There are also quite a few great restaurants nearby -sit down style or fast-food.

Great waterslide, lazy river, & breakfast

Flag review

The rooms were clean & quiet. There were a ton of families there the weekend we stayed, but we didn't hear commotion outside our room when we turned in for the night. The water was warm in the pool and the water slide and lazy river were a hit with the kids. The breakfast was hot and delicious too. The hotel is within walking distance of the Coral Ridge Mall. There is an ice skating rink & a merry-go-round in addition to great shopping. The children's museum is nearby too. Nice weekend getaway!

Tips for Families

Bring floatation devices for kids to enjoy the lazy river.

Great pirate-themed mini golf and go carts for the whole family!

Flag review

Our kids absolutely LOVED this place. They had go-carts for the older kids, and a Lightning McQueen Hot Wheels car for the little ones to feel included. We really enjoyed the variety in each hole of the miniature golf. The waterfalls, tunnels, and "pirate ship" all add to the experience.

Tips for Families

Bring snacks and make a day of it!

Wonderful, kid-friendly family suite, swimming pool & full, hot breakfast.

Flag review

This hotel stay was definitely in our top five most memorable & enjoyable! We were able to get a great rate through a name-your-price travel site, and because occupancy was low during the dates of our stay, we were upgraded to the family suite for no additional charge. The staff was helpful, the pool was great, the hot breakfast included sausage, hot cinnamon rolls, eggs, & other a la carte items. It was delicious and free of charge. We had a wonderful time and the kids LOVED the bunk beds in the family suite. Just to note: the family suite is a one-room suite, but the bunk beds were built inside a "fort"-like structure that surrounded the bunk beds and looked like a log cabin. Our kids had an awesome time and so did their mom and dad!

Tips for Families

Ask for the family suite! King size bed and 4 bunkbeds inside a "fort" (looks like a log cabin on the outside!) There is also a small television in the bunk bed area with a nintendo game system.
