Beautiful way to learn about San Antonio history

Flag review

There aren’t too many places in the continental U.S. where you can walk through churches that were built in the 1700’s. This is a unique park that brings San Antonio’s Spanish Colonial history to life. The park consists of several mission churches, some of which are decorated with really beautiful statues and carvings. If you only have time to explore part of the park, head to Mission San Jose. Photographers will love its dome and archways.

Tips for Families

Although there are trails connecting the various missions, it is a long walk in some cases. I recommend driving between one mission and another if you are traveling with kids. Parking is free.

A hidden oasis in Brackenridge Park

Flag review

The tea garden is located within Brackenridge Park, not far from the San Antonio Zoo. It has a really fascinating history: apparently the former quarry was transformed into a garden during the 1910's using prison labor. The garden features walking paths, a koi pond complete with water lilies, and plenty of plants. Although this is not a must-see attraction in San Antonio, I do recommend a stop here if you are in the neighborhood or if you are in town for an extended vacation. Admission to the park is free.

Tips for Families

Leave the stroller behind, if possible. Crossing the stone bridges requires going up and down stairs.

Great escape from the city

Flag review

Fiesta Farm is worth a drive outside of the city if your kids love farm animals and you are looking for inexpensive fun. The petting zoo has a variety of animals for kids to interact with, including goats, llamas, bunnies, and pigs. They also offer pony rides. Fiesta Farm is best for toddlers and early-elementary school kids, although parents will end up having fun too (at least I sure did!) The llamas and goats are particularly fun to watch, since they will come to the fence to get a closer look at visitors.

Tips for Families

On hot days, be sure to wear sunscreen and bring plenty of water. Although there are some shady spots, you’ll spend most of your time in the sun. Also, be sure to find the hand-washing station before you leave or bring your own hand sanitizer.

Good stay, great location

Flag review

The hotel is located right along the San Antonio river walk, so it's a good option for families who don't have much time and want to be near the major attractions. The rooms are very warm and inviting. Although the standard rooms might not be the best option for large families, small families and couples will have plenty of space. The pool is beautiful, but it is fairly small and seems geared towards adults.

Tips for Families

The hotel offers valet parking for $35 per night. However, there is a public garage right across the street for self-parking.

Thrills and fun at Six Flags Fiesta Texas

Flag review

I was impressed with this theme park. It was clean and everything seemed to be well-maintained. My daughter particularly liked the kiddie coaster. We rode it several times, and it was hard to get her to leave. The park offers a good selection of rides for younger kids who need to be accompanied by their parents, but the park also offers plenty of thrilling rides for older kids and adults. Scream was enough to scare the heck out of my husband!

Tips for Families

Visit between late November and January 5, 2013 to experience Holiday in the Park.

Nice museum, but not a must-see

Flag review

This museum has a comprehensive collection that spans from Ancient Egypt to Modern America. Like the McNay, the San Antonio Museum of Art is located in a historic building. In this case, it is a former brewery complex, which gives it a unique, industrial look from the outside. Although this museum is worth a visit for those who are particularly interested in art, I’m not sure that it’s a must-see for families who are short on time or who are traveling with small children.

Tips for Families

Children age 12 and under are free.

Fun and games at the children's museum

Flag review

This might not be the biggest, newest children’s museum, but it is still worth a visit for families traveling with small children. Powerball Hall, located to your left as you enter the museum, is a big hit with kids and provides lots of interactive fun. Upstairs, check out the mini-airliner and airport check-in desk (Perfect for traveling families!). On the lowest level, there is a grocery store with shopping carts, registers, and tons of toy food. Compared to other children's museums, I'd rate this one as "average," although my daughter did have a great time.

Tips for Families

If you park in the Mid City/Houston garage or the St. Mary’s garage, bring your ticket stub to the museum desk. They will validate it for one hour of free parking.

A great way to experience San Antonio

Flag review

This is a great way to explore San Antonio’s river walk. In addition to seeing the sites from a unique angle, we also learned a lot from the guide who narrated our tour. The emphasis is definitely on history and architecture. While young kids might not find the narration interesting, they will enjoy riding on the boat and waving at passersby…at least my daughter certainly did. Be on the look-out for several landmarks along the way including the Tower Life Building and its gargoyles.

Tips for Families

Rio SA cruises offers discounts for locals, military, and seniors, so remember to bring your ID. Also, the boats don’t have canopies, so be sure to bring sunscreen.

Educational fun at the Clark County Museum

Flag review

This is my favorite museum in Southern Nevada. In addition to the indoor exhibit hall, visitors will find “heritage street,” which is lined with historic homes that have been decorated with historically accurate furniture. It is a great way to see what life was like in the early 20th century. My daughter loves this museum. An added bonus is that admission is only $2 for adults and $1 for kids: an outstanding deal for a few hours of fun and learning.

Tips for Families

On heritage street, be sure to visit the wedding chapel and the print shop.

Art in a fascinating setting at the McNay

Flag review

This art museum is unique because it’s the former home of art collector Marion Koogler McNay. The grounds and the building itself are beautiful, and the museum has an excellent collection, which includes work by Picasso and other well-known international artists. Although I enjoyed exploring this museum, I recommend it for families with older kids. It is a little difficult to navigate the museum with a stroller, and I felt nervous letting my child roam free without it. However, art-lovers and those traveling with tweens or teens won’t want to miss it.

Tips for Families

Explore the museum grounds before or after your visit. Picnicking by small groups is allowed during museum hours. (No food or drinks are allowed in the museum itself, of course.)
