All Aboard to St. Louis

Flag review

Traveling with young children is always an adventure of its own. When you add a train into the mix, it steps it up to a whole new level. Our family decided this year that we would travel from Kansas City to Saint Louis by railway. We were joined by some great friends and their daughter. Together we had a two, four, and nine year old - a wonderful assortment in ages for the journey. The beginning of the train ride was exciting as it was a new venture for all of us. To enhance the experience we chose to depart from our large beautiful Union Station downtown instead of a smaller, closer station. We boarded our train, thrill filling the tummies of our little ones. Finding seats for seven of us wasn't as tedious as I thought it would be considering we were running close on time. I should say here that as a family of travelers, we get lost. A lot! Taking a train was fantastic idea compared to the stress we would have encountered with another mode of transportation. The kids had a backpack each which they carried. They felt important and responsible for this task. We all settled in our seats and began our journey. The first hour was fun, but then the newness wore out and the kids became bored. Luckily the drink car came to the rescue. We let them stretch their legs and walked to the back for a nice break. A great feature of a train's drink car is the booths where you can sit at. You can order an assortment of snacks, pizzas, sandwiches, drinks, and even alcoholic beverages. Our train ride lasted for five hours and at times it was hectic with the kids and entertaining them. But it was worth it, we got to share snuggles, read books to each other, chat with friends, and view new scenery. The best part was that we were able to do so without the stress of a car ride. We didn't have to worry about making a dozen stops to go potty, kids being stuck in a car seat, or the amount of exhaustion that a long car ride can put on a family. As for our train ride back home, it departed in the evening and our kids slept most of the way back. Pure bliss!

Tips for Families

Treasures packed in the kids backpacks: A small blanket and pillow Snacks Books Coloring book and crayons A tab with new apps they had yet to play, or MP3 Water bottle A map of our route to follow (we forgot ours at home and regretted it)

Great amenities included, lacking cleanliness

Flag review

This hotel includes some great amenities: Dinner, Breakfast, popcorn, soda, and even alcoholic beverages. They have a pool, but we opted out of using it when we smelled the strong chlorine and saw the cloudiness of the water. We had a corner room that overlooked the city, and it was a great view. The beds were comfy. We did find some trash, and a hotdog bun behind the curtain.

Tips for Families

The Drury Inn at the Arch is in a five to ten minute walking distance to the Arch and river. I will advise that after dark we experienced some uncomfortable situations with people on the streets. During the day it is wonderful. You can go on horse carriage rides and walk to many attractions.

Suggestions for nearby family-friendly attractions

When visiting St. Louis with children, you MUST visit the City Museum.

Suggestions for nearby family-friendly restaurants

We ate at the hotel which was included with our stay.

Loving Some Villa Time!

Flag review

Our family stayed at the one of the Villas, which is like a condo. My kids loved the fire place, and pool! I would say this resort is more for adults. But they welcome children as well. The staff was very warm and inviting. My husband scheduled a massage for me while he took the kids to the pool. The kids jumped in our jetted tub with some bubbles and got a kick of how quick the tub filled with the bubbles.

Tips for Families

The condos are two or three bedrooms. They are great for a week vacation since they have a full kitchen. They also have a nice restaurant if you are wanting to enjoy a yummy steak.

Amazing Generosity

Flag review

We visited on short notice due to a family emergency from out of town. When the front desk has asked about what brought us to Springfield and we told them story, they opened their hearts. We were offered a discounted price. The next morning the same desk attendant came up to me and asked how everyone was and if she could get me anything. It truly touched our hearts and we will always go back to this hotel when we visit again.

Tips for Families

Love the pool, don't forget your swim suites. Also Zio's is in walking distance and caters to the hotel!

Enjoyable

Flag review

We really enjoyed our time here. The kids were kept occupied and happy. I would say it is a little expensive, but you are paying for your hotel, and attraction together. It was clean, and the food was pretty good.

Tips for Families

Have one parent for each child. This place can become chaotic on the weekends.
