My Travel Style

Travel for our family can be as simple as driving about 5 hours to the family cottage on a small lake in northern Wisconsin or as complex as a last minute trip to Spain to join a daughter who is finishing summer school classes there.

A very, very welcoming place to stay!

Flag review

The Sheraton New York Times Square Hotel is NOT a new hotel but has had a recent major renovation. My husband and I stayed there last year (during the renovation) and my daughter and I just got back from a mother-daughter 4 day getaway where we stayed there again this year. The hotel is truly in wonderful shape, with great looks and great service. It is also within walking distance of many major New York attractions, including Times Square, Central Park, and the theatre district.

Tips for Families

Though the rooms have refrigerators, the contents are quite expensive. Stop at the local Duane Reed (Walgreens) that is just a block away and stock up on your own snacks and beverages.

... remembering.

Flag review

This area is a national tribute to those killed on the terrorist attacks of both 1993 and 2001. Though the museum is not set to be completed until 2014, the water features alone are worth seeing as they are beautifully impressive in their simplicity.

Tips for Families

Though admission is free, I would recommend registering online at www.911memorial.org before visiting. You'll pay a $2 a person fee for the service, but you will find your wait for entry to be a much shorter one. (The museum is scheduled to open in 2014.)

What a wonderful way to spend a beautiful fall day.

Flag review

Though I walked around a portion of Central Park on a previous visit to New York City, I wanted my daughter to be able to experience more of it than I did. SO - we "rented" a pedicab and driver and off we went. For $75, our very knowledgeable driver guided us through a great deal of the park. We learned a great bit of history about the park (and lots fun of movie and TV trivia too) as we saw many beautiful areas of it. We watched boaters and picnickers, saw wedding parties being photographed and a print ad too.We stopped to take pictures in a number of locations, including "Strawberry Fields" and the beautiful fountains.

Tips for Families

If you want to see a lot of the park, consider a pedicab like we did. For about $75 an hour, you will get a great guided tour of much of the park.

Amazing scenery at Red Rock

Flag review

The scenery here is breathtaking - the natural formations of the red rock are centuries old. Though concerts have been heard hear since the 1910s, the wonderful permanent amphitheater was first constructed in the 1940s and remodeled within the last 10 years. Musical stars who have performed here vary from symphony orchestras to many members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. From the kids to the 89 year old grandma, everyone enjoyed our visit!

Tips for Families

If you want some great exercise, walk up and down the steps of the amphitheater. You will get quite a work out!

A beautiful, friendly city to vacation in

Flag review

We visited Naples, Florida in March of 2103 and it is truly a beautiful city with lots and lots of things to do. Golf courses abound - both regular and miniature and the beaches have the soft, soft sand that is so very inviting! ... and shopping, well you'll have to see it to believe it! (I think if you went to one shop a day, it would take you at least a dozen years to visit them all! There is truly something for everyone!)

Tips for Families

If you are not thrilled with wall-to-wall people on the beaches, don't go during spring break! (The beaches were very, very crowded when we visited in March.) But, do take the time to see at least one beach sunset. They are breathtaking!

Gators in the Glades!

Flag review

We took the "Everglades Private Airboat Tour" through the Everglades. Our guide was a very nice gentleman who took us through the wetlands and slowed down often so we could not just get a great view of not only the alligators and the birds and the unique trees that grown in the glades, but also so we could take all the pictures we wanted to.

Tips for Families

This is a great ride to take on a warm day. The breeze blowing through your hair is very refreshing! Also, take the time when you're done to go inside and look around the little shop they have. Not only will you see some cute souvenirs (and find beverages and snacks reasonably priced), but you will also get the opportunity to hold a young gator!!

A family friendly shopping experience

Flag review

If you like shopping when on vacation, this is the place to go. From a host of local souvenirs to clothing, coffee, and chocolate, the Seaport Village has it all. The prices are family friendly too, for both shopping and eating.

Tips for Families

Parking here is reasonable IF you watch your time. With any purchase, you get 2 hours of parking for only $1.00, but after that, it is another $1 for every 15 minutes. Shop owners will tell you it pays to take a trip to your car (if you want to shop and eat longer as we did), and drive out and then drive right back in!

People, Walrus, gill watching at its best

Flag review

If you ever go to San Francisco, take the time to walk through Fisherman's Wharf. You'll see street actors and artists, be able to eat lots of yummy foods (Try the great sour dough breads that aren't just tasty, but often also works of art.), and be able to see the "local" walruses sun bathing and taking their daily siestas on the piers.

Tips for Families

Wear comfy shoes because walking is the best way to experience the wharf.

Great way to have your teenager "meet" a classic

Flag review

My daughter and I attended the Rep's production of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility. Many of you probably know her best as the author of Pride and Prejudice, but her work Sense and Sensibility can be equally entertaining. The Milwaukee Repertory's cast at this Quadracci Powerhouse production was outstanding, truly making Austen's work come to life.

Tips for Families

If they have a "talk back" scheduled, do take advantage of it. The conversations, after the performance, with the actors can be so enlightening.

Breathtaking castle that dates back to the 9th century

Flag review

There is so much history here. Built originally for the military, it was large enough to house an entire city and regal enough to be a palace. In the early 1800s, it was seized by Napolean's troops and converted to barracks. Towers were blown up and a portion of the compound was left in ruins. In the late 1800s, the Alhambra was declared a national treasure and restoration began, creating the beautiful complex visitors can now enjoy.

Tips for Families

The wait for the guide to take us through was quite long, on a very warm day. If you go, plan ahead, because there is a lot of walking, to have a cool beverage to take with you.
