The kids were thrilled to get to see Winter, the dolphin, and learned a lot about marine life!

Flag review

This is a small museum made more popular by the movie made about their "star" dolfin, Winter. We were impressed at how well the museum is organized and how many opportunities there are to learn about all kinds of marine animals. The staff are patient in answering questions and giving information on the level of all ages of children. We toured several areas of the museum and had some hands-on time with the animals, while learning about their habitats, feeding habits and the possible dangers to these animals in the wild. Very educational, and fun!

Tips for Families

There are times when your children will be waiting for a presentation to begin; talk about polite behavior towards others and being respectful and quiet while waiting. It would also be a great idea to talk as a family about marine life, before and after your trip. There are snacks available at the museum, but you may want to bring along some small snacks yourselves. Don't bring too many, though, as you will want to have your hands free to pet the dolphins!

Suggestions for nearby family-friendly accommodations

Tradewinds Hotel is a family-friendly hotel that is located in St. Petersburg, the next town south on the beach. They have a water-theme park and many offers for other activities that will be fun for your family. The kids will be busy all day right on the hotel grounds enjoying the pool and beach. Our kids even enjoyed playing the life-size chess game.

Suggestions for nearby family-friendly restaurants

There are several child-friendly restaurants in the vicinity. At the beach there is a large shaded outdoor playground where you could have a picnic after visiting the museum.

My Kid's Review

Our children loved the Clearwater Marine Museum and are already asking when we can return for another visit. They love Winter, and also enjoyed the pelicans, otters and other animals there. They liked how the staff included kids in their presentations and answered their questions about marine life.

A step back in time

Flag review

The Inn is very quiet and has beautiful vistas, but the best thing about it is its location in the midst of the Blue Ridge Parkway, near Asheville, NC and lots of wonderful rafting areas. Arriving there in the early evening, we had not had dinner yet. So the innkeepers sat us down on the screen porch, where they served us some fantastic ribs. What a way to end a day we started at Black Mountain with hiking and, Asheville where we followed the self-guided walking tour and saw many places we would like to return to. The next day, we explored the Blue Ridge Parkway. We ended the day watching the sunset at the end, and turned in early so we could rise early, have a fantastic breakfast at the Inn, and then go on to a day of rafting south of there. It is a place we have talked of returning many times since we left.

Tips for Families

Make sure to take the kids hiking before you go on to Asheville. You will wear them out, and they will be content to follow you around Asheville even if they are not so interested in the history and tour, as long as you ply them with snacks. The ribs will interest any 13-year-old boy, and the next day -- the rafting. They will be exhausted and have a backpack full of memories.

What a great hotel, next door to the children's museum and down the street from the river!

Flag review

The kids' museum is fun for all ages, and the restaurants in the area are very family friendly. There is shopping and lots of live entertainment for the whole family on the riverfront, and if you're in the mood for a bit of a hike, there is an amazing art museum and galleries at the top of the hill above the river. Everything you need is right there at the steps of the hotel. Just park your car and wander to your heart's content. You may not even have time to do everything in one weekend. That's okay; make arrangements to come back and catch a baseball game at the stadium right next door to the hotel. And at night, the cozy rooms at the Courtyard await you. Chattanooga and the Courtyard Marriott were a pleasant surprise on our road trip this summer.

Tips for Families

Bring good walking shoes for the big guys, and remember a stroller for little guys so that everyone can enjoy their time in Chattanooga. The hotel has a delicious breakfast, so get up early enough to fuel up everyone's tummies for a day full of fun. And because the hotel is centrally located, there is no need for driving and you can return to the room anytime someone needs a nap or just a dip in the indoor pool.
