Fun for the kiddies !

Flag review

We have been going to the DuPage Children's Museum for many years. It is a great place to take small children from toddler age to about 12 years old. There are plenty of hands on exhibits and things for the kids to play with. My son who has Autism, loved watching the chain reaction exhibit, over and over again. There is a water play table and a large bubble exhibit. There are two floors, but not much to do on the second floor. It is a great place to spend a few hours especially on a chilly winter afternoon.

Tips for Families

Don't miss standing in the big bubble, my kids love this! The wind tunnel is super cool too. If you are lucky, you can find groupon or living social deals to save on admittance to this museum. They also offer classes and camps for kids as well as a place to have a birthday party.

Best Zoo in the Midwest

Flag review

Brookfield Zoo is a great place to take your kids for the day. It is a very large zoo. It has every animal family that you can think of and they are all out for viewing. My kids love going to the aquarium section to see the penguins, and the "tidal wave" that seems to go over your head! It is also a nice place to take a picnic lunch, there are plenty of open spaces where you can sprawl out with a blanket.

Tips for Families

For the younger set, the Hamill Family Play Zoo is a must see. The kids can pretend to be veterinarians and dinosaur hunters here. It's a great place to take a break from touring for a little while.

Beautiful Resort for Families

Flag review

Port Orleans Riverside is one of the few resorts that can fit a family of six, if you have small children. We had two double beds and a trundle bed for the littles. It was a tight squeeze but it was worth it for staying on Disney property. The pools were very nice and we even found a less crowded one for a midday swim. The food court at the resort has plenty of food options, for anything you might crave.

Tips for Families

This hotel is the perfect one if you want to stay on property but want something nicer than the All Star resorts. Take a nice stroll around the grounds, they are very beautiful and well kept. You can take a boat ride to downtown Disney from here as well.

O'Hana's Character Breakfast ~ best on property

Flag review

The O'hana Character Breakfast is the best one on Disney property. The location of the Polynesian resort is just beautiful and you can see the Magic Kingdom while you are enjoying breakfast. The character's here are Lilo, Stitch, Mickey, and Pluto. We love character meals, because it saves us from spending touring time waiting in long lines for characters. Here they come to you! The food here is phenomenal. From the juice, to the Hawaiian sausages, to the potatoes, it is all delicious. It's all you care to eat, so they will replenish your family style bowl at any time if you'd like more of something. It's a great bargain if you are on the dining plan too.

Tips for Families

Make the earliest reservation possible, then you can head straight to the Magic Kingdom right after breakfast.

Monorail Hotel, One of Kind

Flag review

We stayed at this hotel when we were only traveling with a preschooler and a toddler. This hotel is super cool for many reasons. By far the coolest feature is the fact that the monorail goes right through the hotel, let me repeat that, the monorail goes through the middle of the hotel! It does not get cooler than that. The rooms here were a little larger than your average hotel, but it is listed in the luxury hotel price range, so one would expect that. This hotel had some great pools and the closeness to the Magic Kingdom made for a once in a lifetime visit.

Tips for Families

This is a great hotel to stay at if you have small children. It was so nice just being able to hop in the monorail in the middle of our touring time to go back to the hotel for the baby's nap time. This hotel is also the home of Chef Mickey's and some other great restaurants. My kids enjoyed the arcade, not all Disney Resorts have arcades anymore.

Embassy Suites is great for families

Flag review

My kids love the Embassy Suites chain, which is ironic because it is geared towards the business traveler. The rooms are very large, which is a great for a family of six. There is a tv/pullout couch area, small kitchen area, large bathroom and then large bedroom with two double beds. There are two tvs in each suite, which is great too. They also had a very nice pool, but my husband did not like the fact that it was right near the lobby and in glass. He felt like we were on display. We went early on a Sunday morning and had the whole pool and hot tub to ourselves.

Tips for Families

The best part of staying here is the free hot breakfast. You can get cooked to order omelets, pancakes, and plenty of other good food here. Much better than the average continental fare you get at other hotels. They also have a manager's reception nightly with free appetizers and free drinks.

Great place to spend a hot summer day

Flag review

My son and I checked out this World Aquarium when we were on a business trip with my husband. It was really fun to see his reactions to everything since there were only the two of us. This was a really cool place, combination of a zoo/aquarium. When you get there you go up to the top floor and work your way down. There are monkeys, turtles, alligators, tropical birds, penguins, and many types of fish. It is very unique how they have everything displayed here. In the downstairs, they have an aquarium tunnel that you walk through it was very cool having the sharks look like they are swimming around you.

Tips for Families

This was a great place to spend 3-4 hours. It is not a huge place, but if you have an afternoon to spare, the kids will really enjoy it.

Nick Hotel fun for hardcore Nick fans

Flag review

When this hotel first opened, the commercials were all over the Nick channel. So it was a no brainer that we took the kids there the first chance we got. The theming at this hotel was done very well, although some of the characters they showcased we no longer on Nickelodeon. My kids were much younger when we went to this hotel and we loved the fact that most of the waterslides end in shallow water, not a big pool. They also have a gated off areas for the toddlers which was a huge lifesaver for us. When we went were lucky enough to see a live Blues Clues show with the real Joe ! I don't know if they do promotions like this any longer, but it was very cool for my kids. The rooms were huge compared to what we were used to (Disney hotel rooms run very small). It was nice having two bedrooms a family room area, plus a kitchen, and large bathroom. My daughter was 9 months at the time, so we were able to borrow a crib from them. It also helped save money having a fridge and microwave in the room, their food court was expensive which is to be expected. However the hotel is right near the main part of Orlando where there are tons of other food options available.

Tips for Families

Ask for a room near the big pool area, it just makes it easier to get around. Also bring a small stroller if you have small kids, their little legs get tired walking around a big hotel.

Best Science Museum

Flag review

This is my absolute favorite museum. I have been going there since I was a very small child and now it's fun to bring my own children here. It is a very large museum and there is plenty to see and do. In the lower level they have a cute children's museum type play area for the smaller set. My kids did not want to leave there. By far our favorite new exhibit is Science Storms. It takes up two levels and it even has a working tornado. Tons of cool things that will attract the kids and make them want to stay awhile and learn more. While we were there they had the Muppets exhibit, which has now since left, but my kids really enjoyed it since they are huge muppet fans. It's traveling the country, so it if comes to a museum by you be sure to check it out. Other highlights are the sense exhibit upstairs, walk through human heart and seeing the baby chicks hatch. When I was a kid, I loved going to the old main street exhibit that had an old fashioned ice cream parlor. Yummy ice cream, but for some reason we always run out of time before getting there with the kids! Another neat exhibit, especially for kids into tractors and such, is the farm exhibit. They can climb on farm machinery and try it out. Plan for a full day here and bring your walking shoes, it's a big place.

Tips for Families

Try to find a deal on groupon or living social for tickets. It can get pricey to take the family there for a day. We got lucky and got a groupon for $48 for a year family membership, that is cheaper than what a 1 day visit would have cost us ! You can also find coupons in entertainment books, that will at least save you a bit of money. If you go during the holiday season, the Christmas Tree exhibit is gorgeous and not to be missed.

Great family fun

Flag review

Great Wolf Lodge is a great family resort. Everything is clean and updated looking. My kids loved the Magiquest that is connected to the main building. We were there over the fourth of July and even though it was booked, we still had plenty of room in all the pools/slides. They have a tasty ice cream parlor that also serves Starbucks drinks, which was great for us parents! The theming in the resort could not have been better, it reminded us of being at Walt Disney World. The one area this resort is lacking is attraction for teens. There is plenty to do for younger kids, but the older ones may get bored since they don't really have any thrill type attractions. It is nice how all the waterparks are connected, compared to similar parks at the dells, where you have to walk all over the place to get from one pool to the other.

Tips for Families

Eat off site, their food prices can be expensive for mediocre food (other than the ice cream). Make sure to bring breakfast items from home, it's a great way to save time and money. All rooms come equipped with a fridge and microwave, so you can keep snacks in there and save a ton.
