Perfect Last Stop

Flag review

Since we were leaving on this day we wanted to see one last thing to remind us of the beauty we found in New Orleans. Big Lake was just the thing! It had history, beauty and fun activities. Our favorite part was the paddle boating. Each boat sits four people so my husband and I took the little guy and the other 3 went in another boat. We raced to see who could go faster and of course the younger legs won! Before we left we sat back on one of the benches and watched the ducks and other water fowl, as well as the giant fountain that shot water up in the air to what looked like at least 40 feet! The perfect place to end a perfect family vacation.

Tips for Families

The best time to go is early in the day. It is not THAT hot yet and it is much quieter then at peak time. Bring some bird seed to feed the ducks and geese that love to show off for the humans!

Awesome, Awesome, AWESOME!!!

Flag review

No matter where you go on vacation with your kids, if there is a water park in the area you cannot go wrong! And since it stays pretty warm in LA all year long, it is a safe bet that you can visit almost anytime you choose to go to New Orleans. While there are too many things to name here, our family favorites were the massive alligator water side and the spider monkey soaker. There is something for people of all ages here so all my kids got to do what they wanted to. There were so many ways to get wet and yet the kids STILL wanted to hit the pool back at the hotel later in the day! This was probably all of our favorite part of the vacation.

Tips for Families

SUNBLOCK! Make sure it is waterproof! Be prepared to get wet! You can't let the kids have ALL the fun now can you?

Great for Photo Ops!

Flag review

Okay so I am not going to lie - this one was more for my husband and I. We love art and had to see the sculptures there! The good news is that even though the kids were not overly thrilled at the location at first, they got into the spirit of things once they figured out that they would be cheesing for the camera a lot! I love places like this because not only are they truly beautiful, they are great places to get amazing pictures of the kids. I swear they must have posed in front of every sculpture there! In the end I think they enjoyed this visit just as much as us grown ups did.

Tips for Families

Sunscreen is a must if you are fair skinned or plan on staying outdoors for a long period of time. This is not a place you want to rush through so plan on staying for a long period of time! LOL Don't miss one chance to take pictures of the sculptures AND your kids.

Pretty buggy!

Flag review

I don't get it but apparently no matter how old kids get, they still are fascinated by bugs! Even my daughter at the age of 15! The museum is totally interactive so get ready if you are squeamish. They also have some animals and fish too so don't worry if you are not a bug person. This one was for the kids anyway, right? LOL I will admit though that I had a good time watching them have a good time and that is what a family vacation is all about, right?

Tips for Families

Encourage your kids to interact with as much as possible. If they are fearful of any sort of bug, this is the perfect time to help them try to overcome that fear. If YOU are afraid of bugs try not to show it! Your small kids are watching and you don't want your fears to hinder them and their experiences!

Exciting for the Kids, Relaxing for Us!

Flag review

My kids all love the Mark Twain stories about the Mississippi River and steamboats so this was a real treat for them. Plus, you don't just have to ride and stare at the scenery (which is fantastic), you There is a mini-museum on board. You can see the engine room museum and listen to the sweet, sweet calliope music as you enjoy your cruise down the most famous river in America.

Tips for Families

Keep a close eye on the little ones! Mine wanted to see how the boat worked and would have gone over the side had I not been holding onto him when he was checking things out! Take time to relax and let the kids take the excitement for you. This is the perfect couple time even when the kids are with you. Oh, and bring sunscreen if you are fair skinned like I am!

All sorts of art and culture

Flag review

The French Market may sound boring to your kids but it is far from it; my kids quickly realized that! Right near the market you will be able to hear the amazing sound of jazz floating through the air and it makes the entire experience so real! You can buy all sorts of cool stuff here too! (Of course, its a market!) Artisans makes Mardi Gras masks right there and the kids will love to see how New Orleans famous pralines being made firsthand and of course eating them! You will even see mimes, painters, and a ton of other street artists displaying their work and doing their best to entertain you and your family. It is like Central Park but better!

Tips for Families

While the pralines are mouthwatering, be sure to pick up some fresh fruit from the market. It is grown locally and you cannot get any fresher than that!

Perfect for the little ones

Flag review

We choose this one just for our youngest son because it screamed KIDS! Our older kids had fun but were not as excited about it as the little one but that is to be expected. Captain Hook's ship was there for the kids to play all over and there were 25 storybook areas. Like you could go to one end of the park and be in the story of Pinocchio. The merry-go-round is something we all enjoyed. There is just something about those things that make people feel like children again! The other rides were just okay but it only cost $3 to get in so it was worth the price to see Jon have a great time!

Tips for Families

Know that your older kids would probably rather skip this attraction but remind them that their little brother or sister will have the time of their lives so suck it up!

So Real You May be Fooled!

Flag review

I adore wax museums and always hit Madam Tuseads when I go to NYC, so when I heard about this one I knew we had to go! Of course I loved it and so did everyone else...expect for maybe my 5 year old. He liked it but I could tell he was a bit frightened by the whole thing. Aside from that we had a good time. The best thing about this wax museum was that it was not just random celebrities like at other places. This one is filled with history from New Orleans and history is a passion of mine. Everything looked so real and learning the history made it even more so. This is a must for history lovers!

Tips for Families

You know your kids best-consider if the exhibits may scare them. Make sure that your kids know that they should not touch as kids love to do! If your kids don't think that a museum sounds boring, point out that there are pirates there!

Best Aquarium EVER and I have seen quite a few!

Flag review

I have been to so many aquariums but this was the most exciting. It is located in the French Quarter area and here you actually get to walk UNDER the Caribbean Reef where you get the chance to FEED a stingray! This was the kids favorite part of this attraction. There is a 400,000 gallon tank that showed off the gulfs coolest marine life and we spent nearly an hour just sitting in front of it and watching. Even the kids sat still for that view!

Tips for Families

Don't worry about lunch. There is a great little eatery right there onsite that offers anything a kid could want. Don't miss the gift shop. The products are not too pricey and there is a lot to choose from. Don't forget to turn off your camera flash. The pictures of glass tanks do NOT like the flash and you will not get a good picture.

Perfect Location, Excellent Staff

Flag review

We were pleasantly surprised when we arrived at the hotel. We were with our four children so we got two rooms that were right next to each other. My husband and I stayed in one with our youngest and the other three had the second room since they were teens. The view is awesome and the kids really loved that. The pool was another major plus for the whole family. Getting all hot walking around town (and there is a ton of things to do within walking distance-another plus!) it was really great to take a dip in the pool whenever we felt like it. Everything was clean. The staff was the most friendly accommodating people I have ever met. You can't beat the price and I think that the hotel was a big contributor to the fantastic time we had in New Orleans!

Tips for Families

Ask for a second floor room with balcony overlooking the street. Don't forget your bathing suits, you will need them! Bring good walking shoes for all and a stroller for the smaller kiddos. There is a lot of walking involved in exploring the city.

Suggestions for nearby family-friendly attractions

There are just so many! New Orleans is pretty compact for such a large place-kind of comparable to NYC in that manner. Look for my reviews on all the awesome things we got to do without having to travel too far from our home away from home!

Suggestions for nearby family-friendly restaurants

The onsite restaurant, Roux on Orleans has terrific food! Dinner is more of an adult affair, but they serve a breakfast in a very family friendly environment. No matter what you order it is delicious! In addition to this one, you cannot walk more than a block without finding good food. Hint: The mom and pop places are the best you can come by!

My Kid's Review

My older kids raved about how "cool" the rooms were and my little one (he was 5 at the time) thought it was the best pool ever. He keeps asking when we are going back to "that pool". He has a one track mind! LOL
