The grande dame of Lake George

For starters, the location is spectacular, jutting out on a peninsula into Lake George. The entire place is an homage to a bygone era, with its grand porticos, buffed wood floors, Oriental rugs, mahogany bars and elaborate crystal chandeliers. The individually decorated guest rooms feature impeccable period details, with sturdy antiques and marble bathrooms, plus such modern-day amenities as flat-screen TVs and a bedside dock for your iPod. Leave plenty of down time to hang out on the grand, multi-tiered lakeside patio overlooking the manicured lawn that slopes down to the water. It’s a wonderful place to sit with a book and just watch the world (and boats) go by. You can also swim or rent a boat.

    Tips for Families

Definitely book for dinner at La Bella Vita, where the specialty is refined Italian cuisine. Ask for a table outside on the verandah.

    The gem of Lake George

The Sagamore is amazing. Fantastic Lake George location with tons of things to do or if traveling with smaller kids, plenty to do right on site. We spent a couple of days and had a great time. The rooms vary from the section you are housed in. We stayed in a building that had a “condo” type room, perfect for us. I did look at one of the older rooms in the main hotel and that would be my choice if kids weren’t part of the equation. The pool is fantastic, huge and looks out over the lake, so pretty. The kids spent most of time right there and we ate lunch at the pool both days. Easy walk into the little town of Bolton Landing and the awesome Happy Jacks – toy store, clothing store and just fun place to hang. A few cute cafe’s in town. Great town and great stay. The game room is a HUGE building dedicated to kids. Basketball court, indoor whiffle ball space, mini-golf, table tennis and other fun kids stuff. Then a great outdoor playground, tennis courts and the pool. A kids paradise!

    Tips for Families

Fun to take boat ride Mini-haha out of Lake George or the Adirondack outdoor adventure ropes course with our older child. All kinds of mini-golf spots in the area, we liked the kitchy Around the World spot in downtown. We weren’t big fans of the Milliondollar beach at Lake George, but loved the public beach in Bolton Landing and also the swimming in the lake deck at the Sagamore. Also Usher’s Park has a great little beach and was a fun spot to watch fireworks from

    Pricey but worth it

Fantastic location. The onsite third-party marina makes boat rental and parasailing extremely convenient. Te staff are helpful and friendly. On a rainy day the options are limited but the onsite activity center provides some choices for all ages. (Don’t bother bringing Xbox along because you can’t connect to the in-room tv.) We stayed in one of the lodges – they’re spacious and provide a kitchenette which cuts down on meal expenses (which are hefty if you’re eating in the hotel restaurants for every meal). There’s a grocery store in town, just at the entrance to Green Island. The restaurants in town provide options but are not significantly cheaper. Adult pool area is great.

    Tips for Families

Bring your tennis rackets, footballs and basketballs. Stay in a lodge — roomier, kitchen, less formal than the main hotel and provides space for downtime. We rented a pontoon boat for a day and had a blast, spent a great day on Lake George tubing and swimming.
