Tips for Families

The Balboa Park Pass offers discounts if you're visiting multiple museums and attractions. For a sit-down restaurant, Prado restaurant is lovely spot for a break.

I've been to San Diego maybe 10 or 12 times, including 3 trips to the Zoo, but never took time to check out the rest of Balboa Park. For this most recent visit, I decided a visit was way past due, especially given the enthusiastic reviews I'd read.   Unfortunately, I didn't have any internet to prepare for my visit and just winged it, arriving in the early morning with a couple of hours to kill.   None of the attractions were open, so I can just review based on the physical attributes of the park.  That's plenty to give it 5 stars, though. I've been to most of the big cities in the US and I can safely say this place is way up top - if there's a better city park, I haven't seen it.  It's worth visiting for th...

Who doesn't like Balboa Park?! The only complaint about it is the butterfly garden, how can it be a butterfly garden with no butterflies? I saw one. Epic Fail. I love how it's a good mix of tourists and locals that visit he...

I've been going here ever since I was a child and to this day I love going to Balboa Park. It's almost like I'm enchanted by this place. So this isn't some tiny park, it's a big area, really. Beautiful architecture, the Prado!, Art Village, the San Diego Zoo, botanical gardens, theatre, courtyards...

This place is GORGEOUS!  I never expected such a large park in San Diego and it's very well maintained!   This park was the first stop in SD for our vacation and we thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful architecture.  Kinda reminded me of Stanford's campus.   The Botanical Garden was amazing - the view of the pond and the building is most def a Kodak moment for all visitors.  The pond is so clear with a few koi and lilies floating around.  We also went to the cactus and rose garden and walked around the trails there.  We also visited the butterfly garden, Japanese friendship garden, outdoor pipe organ stage (went to a concert there later at night), and the Natural History Museum. Personally, I didn't think the mu...

This is an incredible park - protected from traffic, numerous museums, beautiful gardens, a modern art garden, hiking trails, and Spanish (seemingly) architecture. This is the perfect place to go for a picnic, ...

I don't give out a 5 star review very often but when a place deserves it, I will gladly hand it out. Balboa Park in my mind is very deserving of that. The family and I were looking for something to do on a Sunday afternoon so we decided to venture down to Balboa Park. So often, one tends to forget what is available to them in their own back yard and while Balboa Park isn't so hidden, it is definitely a treasure. There are so many activities to do such as visit the several museums or walk around and view the street musicians and vendors. Balboa Park is a great place to people watch. I myself prefer to watch as compared to being watched......call me crazy. One of my favorite spots was their United Nations sect...

I've been here so many times this summer because it is the perfect place to takes friends and family who are from out of town. It is basically free entertainment (especially for kids who like running around outdoors). I have yet to go to the museums other than the Museum of Man (school extra credit). I have also yet to see the botanical gardens because I always go when it is closed. Besides that, I enjoy walking around seeing the beautiful architecture and the ambiance of some street performers. I would say the Japanese Friendship Garden is not worth the admission. I suggest seeing the little International Huts or trying to see a couple museums. Also, parking in the Visitor's Center is very small so park in ...
