While a battle was never fought here, Greater Cincinnati played a prominent role in the Civil War. To guard the Queen City, three defenses were formed on the hills of Kentucky: Fort Wright, Fort Thomas, and Fort Mitchell. Located on the former Civil War sight of Battery Hooper in Fort Wright, the Civil War Museum showcases artifacts, maps and weapons from the 1860s. They also highlight the Black Brigade, the first group of free African Americans to serve in the Union Army. There are always plenty of docents around to answer questions. The museum also has a gorgeous view from the hilltop out over Downtown Cincinnati. It's easy to see why a defense was formed here.
