Tips for Families

One unusual thing about this zoo is that the zoo train is located outside of the gates. The train runs through Brackenridge Park, and is a fun experience for younger kids. Buy tickets and board the train at a small building across the street from the zoo entrance.

Another great trip to the zoo!

Tips for Families

Ride the train! Our kiddos LOVED the train ride and looking around at everything in the zoo's surrounding area. Take snacks and drinks! The zoo allows strollers and food and drink to be brought in so save some $$ and bring along your own. Go early! While there are areas in the zoo that are air conditioned and most areas are in some shade, it does get hot during the summer so go early, avoid the crowds and then head home when it gets too hot.

For my 200th review, I decided to write about a local gem, The San Antonio Zoo. Now for those who have not visited I urge you please visit during the winter! First of all the animals (who are not hibernating) are very active. Have you heard the lion roar? Well, I've always heard them around this time of year. Also, its perfect weather for Texans to be outside in Texas! For less than $15 per adult you can spend the day at one of the best zoos in the country. There is a petting zoo. An toddler learn while playing adventure playground. A bald eagle! Lions! Tigers! Bears! Feed and pet birds! On top of all the fun stuff happening INSIDE, there's the Brackenridge park with train rides, the Witte Museum, Japanese T...

We waited until the weather cooled off to visit the zoo, and then we went on a weekday.  GREAT choices, and all learned the hard way from past visits.  It's pretty exhausting to go in the summer. First we rode the tiny train through Brackenridge Park.  It's under $4 per person, and it'll take you past other museums and through the woods.  It's wonderful, especially for kids, and you can get off the train, see the Witte Museum, and then hop back on a later train. Then we enjoyed the zoo itself.  It was cool enough and had no big crowds, so a lot of the animals were more active than usual.  A lot of food shops were closed, but that was fine by me since they're overpriced and not especially tasty.  Eat first at...

Much fun was had at the zoo. Monkeys, Birds, Toads, Oh my. Sleeping Lions, 2 Cute Hippos, and Butterflies! I love taking pictures. You can pay $1.50 to enter the butterfly area and take all the pictures you want as long as you don't touch their wings. $1.25 for nectar to feed the birds. It's extra but I think, in my opinion, totally worth it for both. Water is about $2.50 I am always shocked at how much it costs in amusement parks and theaters. But, thirsty is thirsty. We got there around 10 and most of the animals were awake. We didn't get to really see the Bald Eagles but they are in a slightly open area since they can't fly and they sat back in the shade. I wish I could have gotten closer to them. Or seen...

This review is really about the summer camps that the San Antonio zoo offers. Hats off to a well oiled machined that keeps my children chattering about into all hours of the night. Last night my nine year old announced that she had to do "research" and then ...

A fun and scenic zoo with lots of exhibits.  My family and I particularly enjoyed the "Lory Landing" in spite of the birds' overly-excited digestive systems!     The one "improvement" I would suggest would be for the various eateries and snack bars.  It seemed as if the vast majority of the food served there is on the unhealthy side.  Lots of burgers and fried foods.  I would think that a place that honors and reveres animals would offer more earth (and animal) friendly snacks.  It could be a great educational opportunity as well as just a better option for the many people who visit the zoo everyday.   Visiting this zoo was fun for my family.  My 3 year old was a trooper and was very entertained.  I also tho...

Too many animals missing! I came here most recently on a Friday afternoon only to find about one fourth of the animals gone! In their place was a sign about renovations :( It's not that much of a disappointment since I basically got to see all the animals I wanted to. Yet it's kind...
