Great Hike - Great WorkoutFlag review
This trail is pretty vertical. If you are looking for a leisurely hike on a path through the woods, this is not it. The hike begins with a climb on stairs formed from well placed, large rocks. And then it pretty much continues the same way until you get to the top. You will be stepping on over exposed tree roots as well that appear to have been carved out and become part of the trail. I was there with a 5th & 6th grade class on a field trip. They all seemed to handle it well and carried their own much needed water, snacks and lunch. I can't say I would recommend doing this with younger kids. When you reach the top you will come down a small hill to Sterling Pond. It is really beautiful and there are lots of larger rocks to spread out on and have lunch. If you continue past the pond and up a set of wooden stairs you will come to the Notch at Smuggs. There is a great vista there to look out on and you can picnic there as well.
