Outdoor fun and learning in the Old WestFlag review
This place was designed for children and families. It mixes educational, like how pioneers lived, with fun, practical, hands-on experiences ... washing clothes with a wash board and hanging them to dry, playing a game that children used to learn how to properly milk a cow. Docents are seen through out the park dressed in period costume and ready to share a factual story or historical perspective. This is the Place, also has the perennial favorites at our house, pony rides and petting zoo. However, with all that said our daughters favorite activity is panning for gold - be prepared for getting a little wet (and maybe muddy if you're not careful). Our prized collection of gold is growing after every visit!
Tips for Families
Your wrist ban allows for 3 activities while in the park - we always make sure to save one of those for the pony rides! This is an outdoor activity, so dress appropriately. Even if cool in the morning it can get hot in the afternoon as it did during our visit in July. While sandals can be helpful when panning for gold we generally recommend tennis shoes if pony rides and time at the petting zoo are on the agenda. If you have a child that can't help but get wet when water is near, make sure you can accommodate this before heading to the panning for gold activity, if water isn't on your agenda that area is easy to skip as it's slightly east of the main park area.
