Great for TweensFlag review
Like many attractions in other cities, the Cable Car is far more of a tourist attraction than a mode of transportation for residents. (Most residents don't ride around in horse-drawn carriages in Savannah or on the Monorail in Seattle). We visited in January for a family wedding and I took my kids on the Cable Car. As tweens at the time, they weren't jaded enough to pretend to not like it and they loved looking out the windows at the views and neighborhoods. They particularly liked standing in the back on the trip back from Fishermen's Wharf. This is a great way to spend a few hours in the city. It's like taking a tour bus, only better.
Tips for Families
Since we were there in January and we went on a weekday, we never had to wait in the lines people like to complain about. Trying to ride this on a sunny summer weekend will guarantee you end up with a long wait and annoyed and cranky kids.
